ECLECTIC, a 21st Century Collection at the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac
After its D'un Regard l'Autre (2006) and Charles Ratton, l'Invention des Arts Primitifs (2013) exhibitions, and ahead of Picasso Primitif (2017) and Fénéon (2018), the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac unveils its newest project: ECLECTIC, a 21st Century Collection, which reflects on the history of art collections as well as the place of so-called "primitive" arts in art history.
Contemplations on non-Western art and the manner of its collection has continued to evolve since the end of the 19th century.
By presenting the works of art in Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière's collection, the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac endeavors to illustrate the responsibilities and motivations of a modern-day art collector, especially in terms of African and Oceanic art.
A Quest for Universal Harmony
Emblematic of our times, where an appreciation for non-Western art has recently come to equal that for its Western counterpart, the collection of Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière - a captain of industry and philanthrophy - constitutes a veritable "ideal museum," which reflects the humanist vision of the world of an atypical art collector in search of universal harmony.
Through sixty works of art - antique, modern, contemporary, and non-Western - including twenty-five masterpieces from Africa and Oceania, the exposition aims to reproduce the history of the collection's acquisition, as well as its relationship with its collector.
An echo of a passion both personal and private, ECLECTIC, a 21st Century Collection is also an occasion for the general public to glimpse a moment in the history of 21st century art collections and discover previously-unseen treaures that collctors traditionally never reveal.
