Rendez-vous at the Citadel of Besançon
Vauban fortifications, a Unesco World Heritage Site
As the masterpiece of Vauban and a listed World Heritage Site, Besançon Citadel is considered to be one of the most beautiful citadels in France. It towers over 100 metres above the old town of Comté’s capital, nestling in a meander of the Doubs, and offers visitors spectacular views from its ramparts. Its astonishingly varied and thrilling historical and living heritage make it an exciting place to visit.
A thrilling historical and living heritage
Uniquely and quite unexpected in this incomparable site, The Citadel is also home to three national museums:
The international famous Museum has displays on biodiversity
Nowhere else in France can you see so many varieties of animals on a single site.
At the Zoological Garden: big cats, primates, herbivores and birds, mostly endangered species.
At the Aquarium: European freshwater fish and crayfish.
At the Insectarium: exotic amphibians, insects and arthropods living side by side:stick insect, beetles, ants, spiders, scorpions, frogs…
At the Noctarium: the secret life of small nocturnal mammals: voles, dormice, garden dormice, field mice, hamsters…
The Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, one of Europe's leading Museums in the field
Created in 1971, the Resistance and Deportation Museum is a poignant reminder of a dark period of History, supported by a wide range of original photographs, texts, documents and objects.
The Museum of Comte, an exhibition space
The Comtois Folklore Museum that brings together hundreds of objects that tell the story of the traditions and know-how present in the rural areas of Franche-Comté and the urban areas of Besançon.
Citadel of Besançon, heritages in culture
