Rendez-vous in Leucate Méditerranée
Leucate, the place to be...
Recently ranked among the three star French marine stations, Leucate is the capital of skiing with its beautiful coastline, lagoons, and numerous schools for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Leucate has not one, but multiple identities.
A city of sea and vineyards, the Greeks would have called it the "white" (Leukos), because of its high chalk cliffs, which in the Middle Ages monitored the inclination of Iberian invasion. In the past, the village of Leucate has retained its southern charm, with alleys carved from shadows and light, and an epicurean lifestyle that makes perfect sense for the aptly named Sol Y Fiesta Festival.
But it's still the sea that best defines Leucate. The former fishing port reinvented itself in the 1960s, by becoming the first resort of the Aude coast through the construction of the marina, one of the largest in the Mediterranean with 1400 berths. Leucate, combined with the Mediterranean and the Tramontana, has all the necessary conditions for the enjoyment of many aquatic sports. Experts in windsurfing and kitesurfing agree, that there is no better "spot" than the Franqui beach (4th best beach in France) to engage in these sports. Its reputation has also far exceeded its borders with the annual celebration of "Mondial du Vent", the international event for wind/water sports (200 professional and amateur competitors, and 100,000 international spectators).
