WELCOME TO TOULON

Toulon between sea and mountain
The maritime city of Toulon nestles in Europe’s largest and most beautiful bay, bordered by high wooded hills topped with ancient forts: an unusual but idyllic marriage of sea and mountain. Although the city has been a powerful military port for centuries, its bay offers much more than the naval base. The adjacent coast alternates pretty creeks shaded by umbrella pines, high ochre-red cliffs, little fjords or “calanques” sparkling with translucent turquoise waters, golden sandy beaches and picturesque fishing harbours.
Mount Faron’s breathtaking summit mingles sunlit white cliffs, rocky terraces, sweet-smelling underwoods and Mediterranean forests – accompanied by a symphony of cicada song!
It is accessible by cable car (the only one of the Mediterranean coast) or road.
Toulon beaches and bay
Boasting 17 acres of golden sandy beaches, 22 acres of green spaces and play areas and pretty waterside bars and restaurants, the Mourillon beaches are the favourite haunt for locals and holiday-makers in both summer and winter.
The wildest beaches of La Mître to the West and magnificent creeks of Méjean and Magaud to the East are absolute musts.
The best way to grasp the city’s layout is definitely to start your visit with a boat tour of the fabulous bay. Many guided tours run the port all year round.
Toulon Provençal city
Set against a mountain and living off the sea, Toulon is rich of historical interest. Its animated little streets shaded by plane trees tell fascinating stories of pirates, prisons, and expeditions to faraway climes…
Toulon’s Provençal market is undoubtedly Provence’s largest and most famous. It’s a feast of colour and fragrance, alive with the sunny Mediterranean accent of the stallholders.

Toulon is the ideal departure point for a large choice of excursions to discover Provence's beautiful scenery. Marseilles, Aix-en-Provence, Cassis, Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Nice and Monaco - to name just a few! – are all located within a 180 km radius of the city by car, coach or train. The Var region and surrounding areas are also home to a multitude of ancient, typically-Provençal villages.
