Christmas Markets in Strasbourg Strasbourg fr

Since 1570, Strasbourg has perpetuated the tradition of the Christmas market. With the Christmas market in Dresden, Germany, Strasbourg's Christmas market is the oldest in Europe and today it is indisputably one of the biggest, by the number of chalets and the variety of the events on offer. The 2012 edition will prove it once more when the magic of Christmas takes over the whole city.

the "Christmas Tree" is also thought to be a secular tradition that originated in Strasbourg since a manuscript has been found dating from 1605 which describes fir trees covered with decorations in Strasbourg's guild halls during the Advent period. With its 12 Christmas markets, Strasbourg invites you to a pleasing stroll in the heart of his historical centre.

The added advantage of the TGV Est high-speed rail link which now connects Paris to the Alsatian capital in just 2 hrs 20, has helped to make the event even more popular, with 200,000 visitors expected by train and extra TGVs and Duplex trains laid on by the SNCF on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the Christmas period. And now with the new TGV Rhin-Rhône service which has been running since 11 December 2011, Strasbourg is only 3 hrs 40 from Lyon and 2 hrs from Dijon. People from these regions can now easily come and soak up the atmosphere of a Strasbourg Christmas. Visitors, who come for a day, the weekend or several days, generally take advantage of the Christmas market to take in the city's exceptional heritage and all its cultural, architectural and gastronomic wealth.
