Festivals and Wine Fairs in Alsace
The many mediaeval castles and the Renaissance houses lining the flower-bedecked roads of its picture-postcard villages are what make the Alsace Wine Route the best-known of its kind in France. It was officially recognised as a tourist route in 1953 and in 2013 will be celebrating its 60th anniversary, offering visitors a unique experience of traditions and wines.
Wine festivals are an essential part of the Alsace wine route and over 50 such events are held from April through to October. Entertainment includes folk dancing and colourful processions, before visitors get down to the serious business of sampling the local wines. There is always a great atmosphere and the partying sometimes lasts all night!
Advent is another special period along the Wine Route, when many producers, from Ribeauvillé to Rouffach, celebrate the coming of Christmas by opening up their cellars to offer cookery classes, theme tastings and live music.
