Hell According to Rodin at the Rodin Museum in Paris
The Rodin Museum is organizing a new exhibition devoted entirely to the Gates of Hell. Rodin labored all his life on this work commissioned in 1880, and drew his inspiration for the piece from Dante's Inferno.
A masterpiece that was never quite completed, the Gates were for Rodin a reservoir of forms and subjects that have seen multiple variations in other works, including The Thinker and The Kiss.
About 200 works will be presented, predominantly coming from the studio collection kept by the museum. In light of the latest research on the subject, the exhibition will trace the genesis and evolution of the piece and will place it in the context of the sculptor's life and times.
