"The Selby is in Cognac" exhibition in Cognac
In 2010 American photographer Todd Selby set out to probe Hennessy's secrets, drawing out the personal project he had undertaken in 2009, "The Selby", which thrust him to Internet stardom.
Jas Hennessy &Co, from the LVMH company, invited Selby to view the steps involved in the painstaking elaboration of cognac one by one. He met and interviewed people from the company, exploring places that have contributed to a rich history the artist had not suspected.
"The Selby is in Cognac", a show of 50 photos based on the artist's work, which he designed to look something like a travel journal, plunges visitors into the privacy of the world's greatest cognac-maker. Without sticking to the factual reality of his stay, he caught the main features that, in his eyes, make Hennessy cognac outstanding: wood and time; the brand and its singularity; souls and hands; blends and flavours; rhythms and seasons.
Better than a photo show, this is a highly personal glimpse into Hennessy's world, a candid, artistic look drawing back the veil on some of the mysteries and magic involved in making the greatest cognacs.
