Family activities on the Atlantic coast
Here are a few tips to make the most of your stay in family on the
French seaside. On offer: nautical sports, cultural activities and
discovery of the natural wonders.
Jump aboard the catamaran «Capitaine Némo» for a thrilling family excursion. After an hour’s sailing, you will arrive at the Glénan archipelago, nicknamed the Breton Antilles. Once you have enjoyed the underwater spectacle thanks to the boat’s glass bottom, you can have a picnic in the nature reserve.
Gallant Knights: The medieval château that dominates the marina will not fail to inspire your children.
Captain for a day: Welcome aboard the Corsaire de Retz, an ancient rig, and hoist the main sail for a voyage all around Pornic. You will learn how to take the helm while discovering the coast in a totally different way.
Green spaces: Enjoy a breath of fresh air in the vast forest of Saint-Jean de Monts. On the itinerary is archery for all the family and aerial assault courses in the treetops.
Heaven on 2 wheels. Leave the car behind and hop on a bicycle so that you can glide along the numerous cycle paths while feeling the wind in your hair.
Eldorado for surfers: The Atlantic Ocean is famous for the quality of its waves and for its surfing hotspots.
A day at the lake: Kids can paddle in the clear, turquoise waters of Biscarrosse Lake and play in total safety on one of its beaches, from which they can also set off on a boat ride with their parents.
The Izadia ecological park gives you an insight into the natural world!
Visit the park independently, with a guide or using the audio guide. Special visits can be arranged for children, thanks to the nature discovery kits and the “Hector the dead tree” exhibit and activities which will really help them learn.
Right beside the ocean, you can enjoy the La Barre play area, next to the skate park, or the Cavaliers play area with its wide open green spaces.
Give into temptation and indulge in long walks along the beach and on the banks of Lake Marion and Lake Mouriscot (games for children, nature parks), take a trip on the little train or visit the museums, like the brand new Cité de l’Océan and the Musée de la Mer, which has been recently extended. Protected from the swell, the sand bar on the beach at Port Vieux is especially suited to families and its beach club allows younger children the chance to start learning about how to swim safely in the sea.
Whatever the season, Hendaye invites you to come and discover its heritage: The Château Abbadia and its grounds which are a protected nature reserve, boat trips on the Atlantic, the fisherman’s quarter and its marina. And don’t forget to take a trip to the other side of the Bidassoa River… to Spain!
Every year the tourist office organises treasure hunts for 7 – 12 year olds during the Spring and Autumn half term holidays.
