Atout France: Describe your favorite landscape in Alsace

Jean-Christophe Harrang: Covering the Alsatian countryside, the vineyard is one of my favorite landscapes in Alsace.

As a living symbol of Alsace’s finest wine and food, the Alsatian Wine Route weaves through Alsace’s thousand-year-old wine producing area for some 170 km. From Thann to Marlenheim, the Alsatian Wine Route passes through a string of 119 picturesque villages or well-known wine producing towns, and offers breathtaking views illustrating the richness and diversity of the Alsatian landscapes. An itinerary to be discovered and savored like a delicious Grand cru!
Launched in 1953, the Alsace Wine Route is one of the oldest wine routes in France. It offers visitors - both  newcomers and connoisseurs – a wide range of activities related to wine and the vineyard all year round. Originally a popular touring rally, it has become one of the jewels of the Alsace! It winds 170km from the north to the south of the region, passing through wine-growing villages, renowned for being some of the most beautiful villages in Alsace. Many visitors marvel at the fortified towns and villages of Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, Andlau, Obernai... The Alsace Wine Route is also a popular gathering place. From April to October, villages take turns organizing wine and harvest festivals. . Folklore entertainment, processions and wine-tastings take place all day and night, in a lively and friendly atmosphere!

AF : If you only had 24 hours in Alsace, where would you stop to eat and drink?

JCH: That’s a difficult question because Alsace is, after all,  known for its food and drinks.
You will quickly fall under the charm of Alsatian cuisine with its succulent specialties and friendly locals… Alsace is proud of its starred restaurants and countless charming country inns and “winstubs”. In short, there is an abundance of places to choose from, in ordertosample the typical dishes of Alsatian cuisine: sauerkraut, Bäckeoffe, matelote,Flammekueche, and all sorts of traditional dishes served in the “winstubs”, the original  wine bar. And don’t miss out on tasting Alsace wines which are “appellation d’origine controlee”,while visiting the numerous wine cellars.
There are other specialties such as eau de vie, liqueurs, and beer, of which Alsace provides over half the national production. 24 hours is not enough to discover all the gastronomic treasures that Alsace has to offer, but it will undoubtedly make you want to come back.

AF: What is your favorite season in Alsace and why?

JCH: Winter, and particularly Christmas time, is my favorite time to visit Alsace. As early as the end of November, Alsace is transformed into  a magical land!

From the Saint Catherine, on November 25th, to the Epiphany, on January 6th, Alsace adorns itself with its finest decorations to celebrate the most magnificent day of the year: Christmas. Over a hundred Christmas markets throughout the region allow you to experience the unique atmosphere of the holidays in Alsace. You’ll see towns and villages decorated with thousands of lights, gourmet markets where you can taste sweet treats, craft markets where you will discover the regional savoir faire...Marvel at the great Christmas tree of Strasbourg, the tallest in Europe, while your children enjoy the Colmar children's market, which will feature some original decorations from the Mulhouse fabric market!

Don’t miss the festive atmosphere of all the little Alsatian villages throughout the Advent period.

The list of cultural events is far too long. The simplest solution: come and visit us and create  unforgettable memories. It's Christmas in Alsace, an event not to be missed!
