The Ports of Toulon Bay, the new cruise ships’ Eldorado
- Atout France: Describe your favorite landscape in Var Provence
Delphine Beudin: It is hard to say because the variety of landscapes all around Toulon is so wide! If I had to choose, it would be between the green hills, olive trees, and vineyards of the countryside and the wild rocky creeks and large white sand beaches of the coastline. One of my favorite areas in the countryside is at the heart of the Var, near le Thoronet and Cotignac, by the riverside. For the coastline, well, again, it is tough to say! Porquerolles and Port Cros islands are like the Caribbean of the Mediterranean. There are also infinite, breathtaking white sandy beaches bordered by pine forests and vineyards near La Londe and Bormes les Mimosas.
ATF: If you only had 24 hours in Var Provence, where would you stop (to eat and drink)?
D.B.: As a cruise guest here in Toulon for a day, I would split my day between Toulon itself and the immediate surroundings. In the morning, I would take a stroll in the old town of Toulon, to enjoy the Provencal market, the pedestrian streets, the shady squares with fountains, the shops, and monuments. Then, I would take the cable car to the top of The Faron hill to enjoy the most breathtaking panoramic view of the bay and coast. Back at the port, I would take a boat trip around the bay, known as the most beautiful in Europe! I would eat either in the marina, the old town, or “Le Mourillon” district, with its luxuriant gardens and beaches, to enjoy a fresh glass of Rosé with fish or seafood. After lunch I would go to Sanary-sur-mer, an authentic village, and Le Castellet medieval village. Both are only a 15 minute drive from the port, and easily accessible!
ATF: What is your favorite season in Var Provence and why?
D.B.: Spring and fall are my favorites, both for their light and colors. Spring offers the green nature and colorful flowers with mild temperatures and a special light, while the fall offers its rustic colors and seasonal product like wine, chestnuts, honey, olives, mushrooms and, again, beautiful sunlight. Moreover, these seasons are quieter than the summer time…
