With its rugged coastlinesweeping sandy beachesfishing villages and rich cultural historyQuiberon is a superb holiday destination. Its peninsula – measuring just 22 metres wide at its narrowest point – juts into the sea for nine miles and its main village Quiberon is crammed with fish restaurants, art galleries and little boutiques. Quiberon’s beaches have something for everyone: the windy expanses west of Penthièvre in the north are popular with horse-riders, sand-yachters and surfers, while families favour the sheltered beaches around St-Pierre in the south. The villages of Quiberon are charming, with clusters of granite or blue-and-white-painted fishermen’s cottages interspersed with ancient chapels, and four ports where fishermen unload their catch and where weekenders moor their cruisers. Port Maria used to be France’s principal sardine fishing port and it still has around 200 fishing boats; it’s here too that you catch the ferry over to Belle-île-en-mer.
