Biking and Hiking up Mont Ventoux mont ventoux fr

Majestic Mont Ventoux peaks at 1,912m and is known as the Giant of Provence – its majestic silhouette dominates the landscape and is classified as a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. It’s a paradise for sporty types, who can take on the personal and physical challenge of ascending it on foot or by bike. From the route there are exceptional views of the Alps in the north and the Mediterranean in the south as it passes through vineyards, orchards and fields of lavender. If you make it to the summit, look out for the moving memorial to Tommy Simpson, the British cyclist who collapsed there during the 1967 Tour de France. Your subsequent descent will cover the smaller, though no gentler, Dentelles-de-Montmirail hills, with their sprinkling of lovely villages and Séguret and Gigondas vineyards. Pull up a chair and pop a cork – you will have deserved it.
