Place de la Bastille
This is where the Bastille prison once stood until the famous Storming of the Bastille and the prison’s subsequent destruction between July 14, 1789 and July 14, 1790. The name “Bastille” refers to the surrounding area.
The July Column (Colonne de Juillet) commemorates the events of the July Revolution (1830) and stands at the center of the square. Other notable features include the Bastille Opera, the Bastille subway station and a section of the Canal Saint Martin.
Thanks to its many cafés, bars, night clubs, and concert halls, the northeastern area of Bastille thrives at night. Because of its historical significance, the square is often used for political demonstrations.
