Hot/Cold: Well-Being in the Pyrénées Ski Stations
After flying down the slopes, or for a day off from skiing, there is nothing like a little spa day. The Hautes-Pyrénées speciality? Balneotherapy! Jacuzzis with a view over the peaks, outdoor natural thermal spring pools, calming massages, relaxing Turkish baths - this is what awaits you in the various Pyrénées resorts.
Stations thermales d’Ax-les-Thermes et de Luchon
Ax-les-Thermes and Luchon, here are two major names of the Pyrenees, both due to their ski resorts (Luchon-Superbagnères is the most popular) and their spa resorts. In Ax-les-Thermes, the centre of balneology, you will find the warmest waters of the Pyrenees: up to 78 degrees! The benefits of its sulphurous waters have been reputed for several centuries. To check it out, after having skied on Ax 3 domaines, head to Bains du Couloubret. Indoor and outdoor pools, Turkish bath and sauna, body massages, 3,000m² dedicated to relaxation awaits you here.
It is in Luchon that you will find the one and only natural Turkish bath in Europe: the Vaporium, at Luchon Forme et Bien-être. Here, the thermal water filters through the underground gallery walls (150m long), giving off an intoxicating heat between 38 and 42 degrees (Celsius). Ideal for muscular relaxation after the slopes! There is also a pool, a fitness and treatment room.
Hautes-Pyrénées Spa Resorts
Saint-Lary, an adorable small mountain village, offers both a ski resort (one of the largest in the Pyrénées) and a spa resort. After a great day's skiing, head to Sensoria Rio. To relax, there are several areas: "well-being," "the Rio" with its Spanish canyon décor and "cosmetic treatments". If you still have the energy, you can even make use of the fitness area.
Cauterets offers two ski resorts. The ideal place to ski (in the Cirque du Lys) and practise Nordic skiing and snowshoe trekking (at the Pont d’Espagne, nicknamed The little Canada of the Pyrenees). Yet you can also go there to recharge your batteries, at the Bains du Rocher. Give in to the call of the lake, both indoors and outdoors, as always with natural thermal spring water. There are also treatments, like exfoliation with Dead Sea salt crystals and the lukewarm black mud wrap.
At the Domaine du Grand Tourmalet, it is the Cieléo well-being space that awaits you, with its pool, Turkish bath and jacuzzi. On the menu: bubble baths and hydrotonic (high pressure jets), mud wraps and massages with essential oils. What makes the place unique? Its setting: its dome reveals the valley and, at nightfall, the starry sky, to be admired from the jacuzzi, just below!
At the Domaine de Peyragudes, the Centre Balnéa stands on the banks of Lake Génos-Loudenvielle, at the foot of the ski resorts and at the heart of the most beautiful snowy countryside of the Pyrenees. Here you can contemplate it outside, nestled in the warm water pools. Inside you will enjoy hot tubs, pools, Turkish baths and lots of treatments: Shea butter and vanilla wrap, hot stone massages, Tibetan massages, etc.
