“From Versailles to Place Vendôme” – the Hôtel de Vendôme in Paris celebrates the Sun King 1, place Vendôme 75001 paris fr

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the death of Louis XIV, the king responsible for the creation of Place Vendôme, the Hôtel de Vendôme is offering its guests the opportunity to experience the pomp and splendour of the Age of Enlightenment in this period residence as part of its “From Versailles to Place Vendôme”, a programme which it will host throughout September.

Built on the initiative of the Sun King in order to “create a breathing space” in the Saint-Honoré district, Place Vendôme now enjoys an international reputation thanks to the high concentration of luxury boutiques, famous watch-makers and jewellers who are located here.

The Hôtel de Vendôme takes its name from the site on which it stands: the location of the former private townhouse owned by the Duc de Vendôme which was bought in 1685 by Louis XIV in order to build the square. The hôtel was built after the death of the Sun King in 1723 by Armand-Claude Mollet (architect of the Élysée Palace) for Pierre Perrin, secretary to King Louis XV.

2015 marks the 300th anniversary of the death of the Sun King, a year in which the Hôtel de Vendôme will pay tribute to the greatest of French kings, without whom the building would never have seen the light of day.

Guests at the hotel will be able to enjoy a special “Esprit Versailles” menu created by chef Josselin Marie at the hotel’s 1 place Vendôme restaurant, experiencing the food eaten at the court of Versailles through traditional recipes from the period. Historical explanations of the dishes will be included on the menus.

The decor and music will also help to immerse guests fully in the period.

The event will be followed by a limousine trip to Versailles from the Hôtel de Vendôme for a memorable day which will pay tribute to the artistic glory of the Sun King.

Visit the most famous château in the world, including the French-style gardens designed by Le Nôtre. A wonderful programme of events, including exhibitions and shows, is scheduled at Versailles to celebrate the “Year of Louis XIV”.
