Bordeaux Monumental, Permanent Heritage Exhibition

A “showcase of Bordeaux’s heritage”, created on the initiative of the Tourist Office, has opened its doors, in the heart of Bordeaux.

Through this exhibition area, the city tells of its metamorphoses and unveils its various faces through the centuries. Visitors can discover two thousand years of Bordeaux's history all in one place.

Since Ancient times, Bordeaux has featured remarkable buildings and the city now offers an exceptional architectural and urban collection that is a reflection of all its eras.

Six portraits have been recreated with the help of images, photos and archived documents to present all the city's buildings and monuments in their historic context.

Like a traveller who goes back in time, visitors can discover:

  • The city of today, and its urban project: development of the quays, the arrival of the tram…
  • The 19th century city and the beginnings of urban planning: first bridge on the Garonne, creation of the boulevards…
  • The “Bourdeaux” of Montaigne, rebellious against the authority of the kings of France of which the Fort du Hâ and Château-Trompette (no longer exists) are the symbols.
  • The medieval “Bordeu” of Aliénor d’Aquitaine, covered with sanctuaries: Saint-André, Sainte-Croix, Saint-Seurin, Saint-Michel, Saint-Pierre, Saint-Eloi…
  • The “Burdigala” of poet Ausone, a Gallo-Roman port, “monumental capital”, build in the image of Rome.

Each “portrait” provides visitors with information about the monuments and has a special theme: Art-Deco Bordeaux, Bordeaux-style échoppes, private mansions, the route of Saint-James, etc.
