Photography exhibition "Doisneau et la musique" at the Philharmonie de Paris

The Philharmonie de Paris puts the photographer Robert Doisneau in the spotlight in an exhibition that invites viewers to discover another side of the photographer, far from nostalgia, on the theme of music. Open until April 28, 2019.

His black and white photographs of daily life in post-war Paris are known worldwide. Equiped with his inseparable camera, Robert Doisneau has toured the popular balls, the bands, the cabarets, mingling with the jazz musicians and stars of his time. The Philharmonie de Paris chose to dedicate his upcoming exhibition on the theme of music.

Georges Brassens, Juliette Gréco, Charles Aznavour, Claude François, Maurice Baquet…

A performance man, for whom image had to be properly directed, he always happily responded to the needs of newspapers to immortalize French stars such as Georges Brassens, Juliette Gréco, Charles Aznavour, Claude François—and, of course, his friend the cellist Maurice Baquet. Robert Doisneau also took pleasure in photographing the rising generation of French musicians of the 80s, like Les Rita Mitsouko and Les Négresses Vertes.

The exhibition “Robert Doisneau et la musique” brings together a hundred photographs. Beyond joy and laughter that comes out of it, the exhibition testifies to the magic of the artist’s work: montages, cuttings, photomontages, collages, deformations and fractions.

An exhibition designed as a joyous walk by the photographer’s granddaughter

The exhibition reveals a man who has spent his life running and capturing unforeseen situations and surprises. The world of music is one of the facets of his work, through which he immortalized scenes of Parisian living, grasping moments of life from artisans, the homeless, kids in the streets, street performers and simple bystanders—his oeuvre includes thousands of portraits of the normal people of Paris, including his famous “Kiss of City Hall."

Designed as a joyful walk by Clémentine Deroudille, the photographer’s granddaughter, the exhibition “Robert Doisneau et la musique” is set to music by Moriarty and directed by musician and graphic designer Stephan Zimmerli.
