The Lemon Festival in beautiful Menton on the Côte d’Azur has returned for its 86th year, this time with the theme of fantastical worlds (Mondes Fantastiques).
From 16 February–3 March 2019, the Menton Fête du Citron® is bursting with fragrant displays and colourful parades, echoing the tropical vibrancy of this sunny corner of France.
During the day, stroll around the Biovès gardens and admire the dazzling yellow and orange sculptures, some requiring almost 15 tonnes of citrus fruit to create and all painstakingly assembled by hand. One of the festival highlights is the series of Jardins de Lumières (Gardens of Light) evening events, when the sculptures are illuminated with spectacular light shows – witness this on 16 and 22 February and 3 March (8.30–10.30pm).
There’s also an arts and crafts show at the Palais de l’Europe throughout the duration of the festival, where you can taste the citrus specialities and other local foods that make up Menton’s gourmet smorgasbord of delights. Local artisans also display and sell wooden sculptures, engraved glass, ceramics and pottery here.
But the Fête du Citron® wouldn’t be what it is without its famous fruit-themed corso processions. These daytime (every Sunday) and night-time (every Thursday) carnivals amaze audiences with their euphorically colourful creations. The Thursday night carnivals culminate in a grand firework display.
