Lille: World Design Capital in 2020

From 6 December 2019, this Northern French city will put design in the spotlight, earning its title of World Capital of Design 2020. The programme of festivities promises to be innovative and amazing.

After Turin in 2008, Seoul in 2010, Helsinki in 2012, Cape Town in 2014, Taipei in 2016 and Mexico City in 2018, it’s now Lille’s turn to be recognised by the World Design Organisation (WDO) for its use of innovative design. This is the first time that a French city will become World Capital of Design.

The capital of Hauts-de-France and the 90 municipalities making up its metropolis are being justly rewarded for their initiatives on economic, social, cultural and environmental levels. The year 2020 will be the showcase for all the projects involved.

Exhibitions by international designers

In 2004, Lille celebrated its title of European Capital of Culture with flair. Embracing the theme of innovation, this year’s programme of festivities should be full of surprises. The aim: to make waves in design and enhance its future and the well-being of all.
