The passion for the Va’a- traditional canoe is very popular in the Polynesia, and is the ideal (and athletic) way to see the lagoons that surround Tahiti. Réunion and Guiana promise excitement for those who come for the deep sea fishing, a sporty way to go fishing that is sure to reel in trophies ranging from 50 to 500 kg, amidst the beautiful surroundings of the waves of the Indian or the Atlantic Ocean where there are plenty of swordfish, blue marlins, tarpons and more.

## “Charter” Yachting in the Caribbean

Martinique boils over with excitement during each skiff regatta, boasting small charming boats shaped like canoes that are equipped with one or two square sails and a special type of rigging.

The round skiffs are categorized as a very technical type of sailing, but it is much easier to allow oneself to be carried out to sea by stepping on board a “charter” yacht for a personalized coastal cruise.
Whether travelling as a family or in a small group, you can rent a boat with a crew: the “catamaran” style has the advantage of reducing the "list" in the sea (thereby being tossed around a little less by the waves). Thus, it is not necessary to be a sailor since the crew takes care of everything, from comfort to recreation (including snorkeling lessons). You can also learn a little about how to steer the ship, or you can just relax and lie out on the deck.

Numerous “charter” companies (with fleets of some ten to twenty boats for 6 to 10 passengers) will await you at the docks of Guadeloupe and in Martinique. However, there are also many private owners of boats that live a bit like "nomads under the Caribbean sun," also offering you their services and the friendly style "inn or bed and breakfast right on the water." Above all, it is worthwhile to make sure that the skipper (the helmsman) is professionally competent and qualified, and to choose to go boating during a week that is the most suitable for trade winds (winds coming from the East), from September to April (in order to be out in the open sea).

The rates for a cruise on a sailboat can start at 120-130€ per day and per person, for a package based on an average of 6 people who sign up.

## Canoeing on a Va’a in Polynesia

Are you looking for a new exciting sport that will take you on a journey around the amazing atolls? Or do you want to relax on the beach? How about snorkeling? This is a Va’a: a water sport that originates from the traditional dugout canoe that enabled the ancestors of Polynesians to cross and populate the vast Pacific Ocean. Due to its shape (profile), modern materials (sometimes resembling a canoe-kayak), unique paddling techniques and shells designed for a single person or for a crew, you can take the Va'a out on a smooth ride through the waters and beyond.

The national sport in Tahiti, the Va’a is both a competitive and popular celebration, especially with the event known as “Te Aito”: a major race that has been taking place each year for over two decades that attracts nearly 600 rowers, in which female and junior rowers participate in a 14 km course, and seniors participate in a 28 km course. Above all, we must also mention the “Hawaiki Nui” that takes place in November: a 130 km race that consists of 10 hours of intensive effort (spread out in 3 stages and lasting a total of 3 days) and a sailing strategy, in which 80 crews of 8 to 10 rowers from among the large islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora come to participate. The Va’a also draws competitors from France and from all over the world. The Porquerollaise, a 65 km race organized by the Ruahatu Club of Toulon at the end of July, is a race that has been renowned for over ten years, and in August 2012 the 15th round of the World Championship will take place in Calgary, Canada, bringing almost 29 countries together.

## Deep-sea fishing

Get on board a large motor-powered excursion boat that is headed towards the ocean, cast a (long and sturdy) line, put on a life vest and then wait, being poised for a tug-of-war with a deep-sea fish that is very strong and escapes easily. Reel, reel, and fight against the “warrior of the ocean,” sometimes for hours until he gets worn out, and then you bring in a great catch: that is what you call deep-sea fishing! Sport fishing is neither violent nor cruel, but it is a bit different. People tend to prefer sailboats. The “monocoque” version possesses the charm of tradition, while the “catamaran” style has the advantage of reducing the risk of seasickness (the boat is less “rocked” by the waves).

The crew is made up of a skipper, who is helped by a hostess or other personnel, depending on the size of the boat. Experienced companies possess fleets of sailboats equipped for full comfort that one might even call “luxurious.” You can also find individual boat owners (called "proprietaires" or "circumnavigators"), which are couples or families who fancy themselves “nomads on the sea”, and will welcome you onto their yacht, much like a guest house. They are labeled according to the terms of a sailing charter. There are six specific sites: the coral barrier and the mangrove in the south, the coastal zone in the North and East and the Grand Lagoon in the north, the Loyauté islands, the Ouvéa Atolls and the Beautemps-Beaupré, and the Entrecasteaux.

To obtain UNESCO’s World Heritage certification, sites must fulfill four criteria: an ecological and organic process for the evolution of ecosystems, the presence of habitats that are well preserved to promote biodiversity, including endangered and symbolic species, an exceptional natural beauty, and representations of the history of the land.

## French Polynesia

Faced with problems due notably to global warming, French Polynesia and its local organizdations are mobilizing for the safeguarding of its heritage and its species. Here are the principal initiatives for the protection of local flora and fauna being put to work:

* The tortoise protection center is a scientific and touristic project created in 1999 by the Pae Tai Pae Uta organization, with the active participation of Le Méridien de Bora Bora. In cooperation with the involved ministers, a team has been dedicated to the convalescence of sea tortoises gathered by volunteers. The tortoises, whether adults or babies, are looked after and rereleased when they are strong enough to escape future predators.
* On Moorea, a clinic for sea tortoises has gathered and cared for sick and injured tortoises since 2004. Created as part of a program for the protection of sea tortoises and put in place by the Polynesian environmental minister, the Tortoise Clinic, located in the heart of the InterContinental Hotel Moorea Resort & Spa is managed by the “te mana o te moana” organization. Since its creation, the clinic has hosted 110 tortoises, of which 33 have been rereleased.
* Alerted to the dangers that present themselves in the coral by biologist Denis Schneider, the direction of Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa decided to support the creation of a coral nursery. This veritable underwater laboratory is above all out to protect and take care of coral in danger in order to let it grow in a protected environment. It also allows the discovery of conditions and mysteries of this particular ecosystem in the best conditions. In 2001, artificial concrete reefs in were immersed to support coral colonies and to slow down the effects of the deep currents. Today the nursery shelters more than 91 reefs supporting nearly 3,000 coral colonies.
* Since 2006, Fakarava and six other surrounding atolls in the Tuamotu Archipelago have been classified as biosphere reserves by UNESCO. Fakarava is a coral ring 60 km long by 25 km wide, renowned for the purity of its waters. Created in order to protect the great diversity of its underwater species, the biosphere reserve in Fakarava encompasses nearly 670,000 acres between land and sea. Other than protection of the lagoon, its objective is to protect the numerous endemic species of the atoll, particularly birds and tortoises.

## Martinique

The regional natural park of Martinique was created in 1976 to protect and glorify Martinique’s nature and landscapes. It covers a large part of the island: the natural reserve of Cravelle in the North of the Park, the Ornithological Reserve of the Sainte-Anne islets in the south of the Park, the well managed nature sites including the Domaine de Tivoli and the Domaine d’Estripault. According to its charter, the Park de la Martinique is obliged to contribute to: controlling the evolution of the area, protecting the natural heritage and the landscapes, protecting and promoting Martinique’s cultural heritage, glorifying the natural and cultural heritage in service of a sustainable development for Martinique, and developing the welcome, information, and education available to the public.

## Guadeloupe

The National Park of Guadeloupe includes the most prestigious sites on the island: Les Deux Mamelles, the Falls of Carbet and la Soufrière. This ensemble of diverse aquatic and land-based sites is home to numerous protected species, rich in an ecological, cultural, and environmental sense. The national park coordinates the Natural Reserve of the Grand-Cul-de-Sac-Marin, located between Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre to the north of the Salée River : it’s composted of mangroves, marshy forests, swamps, humid prairies, coral reefs, and underwater herbariums. This zone was classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1992.

## Guiana

Established in February 2007, the National Amazonian Park of Guiana preserves a unique environment and its inextricable cultural heritage (that of the Amerindian and Maripa-soula people, and other communities). This area covers nearly 8.5 million acres – 4 times the size of the island of Corsica!

The Natural Regional Park covers a total area of 6,998 km2 with two ends: in the East, the swamps of Kaw, and in the West, the communities of Mana and Awala-Yalimapo. On top of that, it’s home to one of the last stable populations of black caimans in the world, and is one of the most important egg-laying areas for Luth tortoises.

The natural reserve of the island of Grand Connétable, 15 km from the estuary of the Approuague river, completes this picture. It’s the only protected bay on the Amazonian coast, and there, one can count the rare or endangered underwater species, like green tortoises or giant grouper fish.","markdown2":"* [Organize your stay in Guiana](http://www.tourisme-guyane.com/en.html)
* [Prepare your visits in Réunion island](http://www.reunion.fr/en/home.html)
* [Visit New Caledonia](http://www.nouvellecaledonietourisme-sud.com/en)
* [Discover Tahiti](http://www.tahiti-tourisme.com/)
* [Plan your vacations in the Guadeloupe islands](http://www.lesilesdeguadeloupe.com/)
* [Visit Martinique](http://www.martinique.org/)","location":{"lon":-149.406843,"lat":-17.679742},"destinationTags":[{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"1eh5KBNyocm6cMYgu2aumQ"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"3JALaTiRPaEM2QAo6Cg6mg"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"2Nl5OYMiXe68gYMAiK82y6"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"GmVLSp0M2OikC6eQggqq8"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"5sBwrnR4Vaso6qMM6qwQCc"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"6ollsNMLOoceYcoAUKeGA4"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"UAGVkN5OGymAgeimkesQI"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"6P09wSwBOMSgCco0oi86mm"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"2KKwiDN4Qg6C2sY2uIMMsU"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"6jsb0xatAkWSOsw2wqWIGu"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"5oaGLs9Da022EccguAE4QW"}}],"thematicTags":[{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"5YzVmGX7gWcAYkUMw2G6m"}}],"seo":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"2KqEbqu1HisOSYe8AwSS2W"}},"poi":false
{"title":"Martinique: the Grand Marché in Fort-de-France","status":"Publié","validation":"confirmed","slug":"martinique-grand-marche-fort-france-0","publicationDate":"2013-09-02T15:20+00:00","depublicationDate":"2050-12-15T00:00:01","headerImage":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"hC9KCclBF6IoUUk4uAOS0"}},"markdown1":"Officially opened with great pomp in 1885, the Grand Marché in Fort-de-France, or simply the Marché aux Epices (Spice Market), is the largest market on the island. It is one of the world's most sensual rhythms that fully beautify the Caribbean culture of the people of the Lesser Antilles.

Men and women dance with **intertwined bodies** – but with free minds – in total harmony. Simple descriptions like this filled magazines and newspapers around the world during the '80s, when "**Zouk**" fever exploded. A dance full of sensuality, Zouk became an **icon of the Caribbean** and a synonym for its charm.

The rhythm, whose name is slang for the word "party" in **Creole**, was born in the late '70s in **Guadeloupe**, French West Indies, with the debut of the **legendary band Kassav**, founded by Jacob Desvarieux and the brothers Pierre and Georges Decimus. The idea, supported by renowned musician Freddy Marshall, was to give a more modern guise to carnival music from Martinique and Guadeloupe.

The band released their first album Love and Ka Dance in 1980. However, it was in 1985 that they achieved global recognition, with the hit “Zouk la sé sèl médickaman nou ni,” which means “Zouk is the only medicine we have” in Creole.

In France, Kassav (meaning "cassava," in English) topped music charts several times, with many hits during their 30-album career.

## "Love" Version

In addition to sharing the birthplace of Zouk with Guadaloupe, the beautiful island of Martinique is where "**Zouk Love**" was born – a slower, more melodic and (even) more sensual rhythm. One of the biggest successes came with **Jocelyne Béroard**, who became one of the leading vocalists of the band Kassav, in 1983. The Martinique native also recorded an album with Philipe Lavil, featuring the famous hit “Kole Séré,” one of the most played songs in the history of Zouk Love.

Over the years, Zouk also contributed to strengthening the image of other Caribbean rhythms around the world, such as **Salsa**, **Merengue** and even the **Brazilian Lambada**, often confused with the Love version of the music from the Antilles.

These various influences and blends with **Jamaican Reggae** or the Angolan Kuduro led to new styles of Zouk, which for many critics is proof of its cultural richness. Besides the traditional and Love versions, there are other styles: Betón, played in carnival music from Martinique; American R&B, which French purists prefer to call Zouk Nouvelle Génération; and even the newly created Soulzouk, widespread in Brazil.

When walking through the streets of **Fort de France**, the capital of Martinique, or between small townships in the interior of the island, it is common to hear the **native melody** in its various forms. Bars and restaurants use it as background music, conveying a compelling sense of joy and seduction.

In the famous **nightclubs** specializing in this rhythm, such as *the Cotton Club* or *Le Negresco*, local dancers mingle with tourists, who have fun while sipping the typical drink **Ti Punch**, a version of the Brazilian caipirinha, with lime, sugar cane syrup and white rum. Its highest point is an old volcano, the Piton des Neiges, rising to 3,070m, the top of which is occasionally whitened by frost or a few snowflakes and which serves as a backdrop for 3 mountain cirques (Salazie, Cilaos, Mafate), all of which act as a tempting playground for a range of hiking activities.
The footpaths around Mafate, which are still used by the local postman (the local doctor travels by helicopter nowadays!), provide the only access to the “îlets”, seven small villages clinging to the mountain slopes and home to a scattered total population of just 800 inhabitants, hence the sense of isolation and spirit of adventure which seems to inspire hikers. A recently designated national park (“Les Hauts”) covers a large part of this contrasting mountainous area: from rocky desert to what is almost the world’s wettest tropical forest; from fields of sugar cane and the panoramic crests of the Le Dimitile peak to the dense undergrowth of the Bélouve forest and the meadows of the Les Palmistes plain etc. It is also possible to hike along the incredibly wild coast towards Sainte-Rose, on the east coast.

Réunion’s success as a “hiking and trekking” destination (lots of professional companies offering hiking packages can be found locally, in addition to numerous specialist tour operators on mainland France) is further enhanced by the small time difference and the promise of an exotic yet completely safe holiday. In the heart of the primary forest, the vast Kaw swampland is one of a number of unmissable sights, with its multi-coloured and exultant birdlife and lurking caiman.
Hiking trips are often combined with excursions by dugout canoe, as rivers are the best form of transport here.

Some local service providers:
[Guyane Randonnées](http://www.guyane-randonnees.fr/)
[Compagnie des guides de Guyane](http://www.guides-guyane.com/asso_cgg.php)

*Author: Philippe Bardiau*","markdown2":"* [Organiser votre séjour à La Réunion](http://www.reunion.fr/)
* [Préparer vos randonnées à La Réunion](http://www.reunion-nature.com/-reunion-nature-com-.html)
* [Organiser votre séjour dans les Iles de Guadeloupe](http://www.lesilesdeguadeloupe.com/)
* [Organiser votre séjour en Martinique](http://www.martiniquetourisme.com/Accueil)
* [Organiser votre séjour à Tahiti](http://www.tahiti-tourisme.pf/home.php?etabid=6)
* [Le guide touristique de Tahiti et ses îles](http://www.tahitiguide.com/)
* [Organiser votre séjour en Nouvelle-Calédonie](http://www.nouvelle-caledonie-tourisme.fr/)
* [Organiser votre séjour en Guyane](http://www.tourisme-guyane.com/)
* [Les circuits en Guyane](http://www.guyane-guide.com/dossiers/circuits_de_randonnees.htm)","markdown3":"* [FACEBOOK - Ile de La Réunion Tourisme (IRT)](http://www.facebook.com/ReunionTourisme)
* [FACEBOOK - La Martinique, Fleur des Caraïbes](http://www.facebook.com/pages/La-Martinique-Fleur-des-Cara%C3%AFbes/13968306412)
* [FACEBOOK - Les Iles de Guadeloupe](http://www.facebook.com/pages/Les-%C3%8Eles-de-Guadeloupe-CTIG/122161421157336)","locationTitle":"Fort de France","location":{"lon":-61.049019,"lat":14.618437},"destinationTags":[{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"6ollsNMLOoceYcoAUKeGA4"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"5sBwrnR4Vaso6qMM6qwQCc"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"5oaGLs9Da022EccguAE4QW"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"6jsb0xatAkWSOsw2wqWIGu"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"2KKwiDN4Qg6C2sY2uIMMsU"}},{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"UAGVkN5OGymAgeimkesQI"}}],"seo":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"2t9BdryLBGUUWkmkeOyMUS"}},"poi":false
{"title":"Our six favourite spots to watch the sunset in Martinique","status":"Publié","validation":"confirmed","slug":"our-six-favourite-spots-to-watch-the-sunset-in-martinique","author":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"2ROnJcDLrGMUgsycScM4ka"}},"headerImage":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"3r1ke0tw0wSokcCyEqYYMG"}},"cardImage":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Entry","id":"3TVaLWFxSU3uBOmG50Eglo"}},"shortDesc":"The sky ablaze with purples, pinks, and gold.
